The Italian organist, harpsichordist and conductor Andrea Marcon is one of the most acclaimed
musicians in early music. Born in Treviso in 1963, he studied organ and harpsichord with Jean-Claude Zehnderat the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis. In 1986 he won the first prize at the organ competition in Innsbruckand and in 1991 the first prize in the harpsichord competition in Bologna. In 1997 Andrea Marcon founded the Venice Baroque Orchestra. His dedication to the rediscovery of baroque opera led to the first modern-day stagings of Francesco Cavalli’s L’Orione (1998), Handel’s Siroe (2000), Cimarosa’s L’Olimpiade (2001) and Galuppi’s L’Olimpiade (2006). In April 2004, he conducted the United States premiere of Siroe at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. He has been heralded for his performances of Marcello’s Il trionfo della Musica e della Poesia; Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso, Atenaide, Tito Manlio, Gloria, Magnificat, and Juditha Triumphans; Cavalli’s Calisto and Giasone; Monteverdi’s Orfeo and Vespers; Handel’s Messiah, Ariodante and Alcina and Bach’s Mass in B minor and cantatas.
Today Andrea Marcon is widely recognized as a leading interpreter of the baroque, classical and early romantic periods. He has directed the German radio symphony orchestras WDR, HR, and NDR, the Danish Radio Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, L’Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, Orquesta Ciudad de Granada, Mozarteum Salzburg, Camerata Salzburg, Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Essen Symphony Orchestra and Bremen Philharmonic, among many others, in repertoires including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert symphonies and early Rossini operas.
Over the past six years he has been a frequent guest conductor at  the Basel Theatre, leading La Cetra Baroque Orchestra in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, Cavalli’s Calisto, Handel’s Ariodante, Vivaldi’s Orlando Furioso, Mozart’s Idomeneo, and Purcell’s Fairy Queen. At the Opera Theatre in Frankfurt he has conducted Charpentier’s Medée, Orlando Furioso, Ariodante and Cavalli’s Giasone. Andrea Marcon has led the Venice Baroque Orchestra in most of the prestigious concert halls and festivals around the world. In October 2012 he made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic and in summer 2014 at the Aix en Provence Festival.
The conductor has over 50 CDs to his credit. For his recordings as organist and harpsichordist he was awarded four times the Deutschen Schallplatten Kritik prize. His recordings as conductor have also received numerous accolades, including the Diapason d’Or, Choc du Monde de la Musique, the Vivaldi Award of the Cini Foundation, Germany’s Echo Award and the Edison Prize in Holland. Among his many CDs with the Venice Baroque Orchestra for Sony Classical and Deutsche Grammophon are albums with Magdalena Kožená, Patricia Petibon, Angelika Kirchschlager, Giuliano Carmignola, Simone Kermes and Viktoria Mullova. With La Cetra he has recorded Mozart overtures and arias with Mojca Erdmann.
Andrea Marcon is professor of organ and harpsichord at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis and since September 2012 he has been the artistic director of the Orquesta Ciudad de Granada (Spain).
