Sonig Tchakerian, of Armenian origin, studied violin with her father from an early age. She graduated at the age of 16 with top marks and praise with Giovanni Guglielmo and perfected her skills with Salvatore Accardo, Franco Gulli and Nathan Milstein. Awarded at the Paganini Competition in 1980 and at the ARD in Munich in 1988, Sonig has given recitals for solo violin or piano, collaborating among others with Martha Argerich, Bruno Canino, Andrea Lucchesini, Roberto Prosseda and Stefania Redaelli. As a soloist, she has played with major orchestras such as the Royal Philharmonic, Bayerischer Rundfunk, Pomeriggi Musicali, Verdi, San Carlo, Arena, OPV collaborating with conductors such as Piero Bellugi, Riccardo Chailly, Daniele Gatti, Antonio Janigro, Daniel Oren, Claudio Scimone, Emil Tchakarov. She is one of the few violinists to have performed the complete Capricci di Paganini live, which she also recorded on CD in 2003. As conductor-soloist with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto she recorded all Haydn's Concertos for violin and orchestra (for the German label Arts). Together with her husband, the conductor Giovanni Battista Rigon, she founded the "Settimane Musicali" at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. The Festival takes place in the famous Palladio Theatre and is regularly broadcast by RAI Radiotre.  The composers who have written for her: Ambrosini, Boccadoro, Campogrande, Dall'Ongaro, Mosca, Perocco, Sollima. She holds master classes at "Antiruggine" in Castelfranco Veneto and for the Gubbio Summer Festival. Since 2009 she has been holding violin masterclass at the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. In 2008, she had the honour of playing in the presence of the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano, at the Palazzo del Quirinale live for RAI Radiotre. She plays a 1760 Gennaro Gagliano violin.
