La Fenice Opera House

In the 19th century the theatre was the venue for numerous first performances of works by Gioachino Rossini, Vincenzo Bellini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Giuseppe Verdi. In the 20th century great attention was paid to contemporary production, with world premieres by Igor Stravinsky, Benjamin Britten, Sergej Prokofiev, Luigi Nono, Bruno Maderna , and recently Mauricio Kagel, to name just few. With a capacity of one thousand seats, excellent acoustics (further improved after the recent reconstruction following the devastating fire in 1996), a stable orchestra and choir of 98 and 66 elements, a large international audience in addition to the assiduous local public, the Fenice Opera House still stands as a production center of primary importance. More than one hundred opera performances are offered per year, in addition to an important symphony season entrusted to directors of international caliber such as Myung-Whun Chung, Riccardo Chailly, Jeffrey Tate, Vladimir Temirkanov, Dmitrij Kitajenko, as well as ballet performances and chamber music concerts.
