The Frari’s Glorious St. Mary's Basilica

In 1231, under the doge Jacopo Tiepolo (1229-1249), the Franciscan friars worked to reclaim the so-called Lake Badoer, a marshy terrain in the district of San Stefano Confessor (San Stin), which became the site of the first church dedicated to the Madonna, and which the Venetians immediately called Santa Maria dei Frari, with its adjacent monastery. However, because this first church was already insufficient for the faithful who came to Mass, on April 28th, 1250 the first stone of the second church, dedicated to the Glorious Saint Mary (Santa Maria Gloriosa) was laid. In about eighty years the church was again too small and around the year 1330 new extension works began, which were then completed in 1396 for the new church, the third built by the Franciscans. The church was consecrated on May 27th, 1492 with the name of Santa Maria Gloriosa. The Pesaro family took care of the construction and decoration of the church, and in 1478 it was granted the sacristy as a noble family chapel and burial place. The ninth pentagonal-shaped apse was erected, and the main altar was finished then decorated with the now-famous altarpiece, the Assumption by Titian. In the 19th century the Franciscans were removed from the church, which was only returned to them in 1922.
