Paolo Fresu began studying the trumpet at the age of 11 in the musical band of his native country (Sardinia, Italy) and, after various experiences of light music, he discovered jazz in 1980. He begun his professional career in 1982 recording for RAI under the guidance of Maestro Bruno Tommaso and attending the Seminars of Siena jazz. In 1984 he graduated in trumpet at the Conservatory of Cagliari.In 1990 he won the "Top jazz" Award organized by the magazine 'Musica jazz' for Best Italian musician, Best Group (Paolo Fresu Quintet) and Best Record ("Arrigo Polillo" Award for the record 'Live in Montpellier'); in 1996 the Award for Best European Musician through one of his works of the 'Académie du jazz' in Paris and the prestigious 'Django d'Or' for best European jazz musician. Lecturer and head of several important national and international educational realities, he has played in every continent and with the most important names of African-American music of the last 30 years. He has recorded over four hundred records of which about ninety in his own name or in leadership, others with international collaborations (French, German, Japanese, Spanish, Dutch, Swiss, Canadian, Greek labels) often working with 'mixed' projects such as Ethnic Jazz Music , World Music, Contemporary Music, Light Music, Early Music - to mention few - collaborating, among others, with M. Nyman, E. Parker, Farafina, O. Vanoni, Alice, T. Gurtu, G. Schüller, Negramaro, Stadium. In 2010 he founded his own record label Tŭk Music. He has been directing the 'Time in jazz' Berchidda Festival for thirty years and was artistic director and teacher of the Nuoro Jazz Seminars for 25 years. In his palmarès the direction, for a three-year period, of the international festival of Bergamo stands out. He has also coordinated numerous multimedia projects collaborating with actors, dancers, painters, sculptors, poets, and writing music for films, documentaries, videos or for the Ballet or Theatre. Today he is active with a myriad of projects that see him engaged in hundreds of concerts a year, almost everywhere in the world. He is a testimonial for Amnesty International, Fondazione Francesca Rava and Asia and, since 2016, he has been a UNESCO Youth Ambassador for Italy. He lives between Paris, Bologna and Sardinia.
