Nicola Baroni graduated in Cello and Electronic Music, then obtained a degree in Music Aesthetics from DAMS in Bologna. He furthered his studies in Cello and Chamber Music with Franco Rossi, Alain Meunier, Anner Bijlsma, Siegfried Palm. He has completed stages in Live Electronics at AGON-Audiofficine in Milano and at IRCAM in Paris. He is professor of Cello at the Conservatory "Monteverdi" of Bolzano, and of Improvisation Techniques at the departments of New Technologies and Education of the same Conservatory. He is currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Edinburgh, which focuses on the development of performing and compositional practices in Real Time through Augmented Cello, software and sensors. In addition to his previous collaboration with symphony orchestras, he has always worked in the chamber music sphere with a classical repertoire in duo and trio with piano and string quartet. He has developed research and production activities in the repertoire of the twentieth century with the ensembles Octandre, Icarus, Siddharta, Current Music, Music / Reality, Interensemble, Antisonic-Elektronika, FontanaMix, Cardew Ensemble. He has collaborated with composers such as Bussotti, Castaldi, Donatoni, Malec, Linz Maues, Casserley. The attention to the performing practices has manifested itself with the musical practice on ancient instruments and the publications on the baroque repertoire for the Ut Orpheus publishing house. For some years now he has been working on interaction with the computer, electroacoustic composition, improvisation and the execution of graphic scores through "Laptop-Extended Cello". The recording activity concerns works by Monteverdi, Torelli, Liszt, Malipiero, Villa Lobos, Scelsi, Gentilucci, in collaboration with the labels Tactus, Bongiovanni, Discantica, Luna, Rivo Alto. He has recently released the CD "Italian Cello XXI Secolo" for Bottega Discantica. Nicola Baroni has been present for years in the concert scene with contemporary, romantic and baroque repertoire. The concert activity is carried out in Italian theatres, at national and international festivals in Europe, the United States, South America and Japan. The concerts at the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Fenice in Venice, the Regio in Turin, the Politeama in Palermo, the Piccolo in Milan, the Cantiere d'Arte in Montepulciano, the Accademia Chigiana in Siena, the University La Sapienza in Rome, the Accademia Filarmonica in Trento, the Sala Michelangeli in Bolzano, the Sala Filarmonica in Verona are all worth mentioning; and among the various Angelica Festival, GAMO, REC, Ravenna Festival, Spazionovecento, MilanoMusica, SpazioMusica in Italy, the Piccadilly Festival in London, the Gaudeamus in Amsterdam, Music Factory in Bergen, Neue Music in Freiburg, Reykyavik Festival, Lucero Festival in Paris, Kiev Music Fest, Snyggton in Berlin, Donatoni Festival in Mexico City. He has given lectures and workshops on contemporary repertoire for string instruments and on improvisation/live electronics relations at the Kunst Universitat in Vienna, the Kunst Universitat in Berlin, the University of Arts in Gothenburg, the Musik Hochschule in Hanover, the conservatories in Bolzano and Adria, the University of Arts in Santa Fè, the University of Montevideo.
